Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Public Company Limited (BDMS) continues to elevate green healthcare facility standards, reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality healthcare alongside responsible environmental stewardship. This initiative reflects the organization’s concrete implementation of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.
Most recently, TOA Paint (Thailand) Public Company Limited, Thailand’s leading innovator in paints and construction materials, has been entrusted as BDMS’s partner in supplying paint products certified with the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The EPD is an internationally recognized standard that transparently discloses a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Certified by the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), TOA is the first company in Thailand to achieve comprehensive EPD certification covering all paint product categories in a systematic and integrated manner.
The pilot implementation began at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, the first hospital within the BDMS network to adopt EPD-certified paint products. This initiative supports the enhancement of green building standards and contributes to the hospital’s progress toward LEED Platinum certification. Executives from both organizations jointly reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a safe, transparent, and environmentally friendly healthcare environment.
Dr. Asawin Poovatanasarn, Director of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, stated that the hospital places the highest priority on the safety of patients, visitors, and staff. Selecting products with transparent and verifiable environmental data strengthens trust and demonstrates genuine corporate responsibility toward society and the environment. It also forms part of the organization’s strategy to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint.
The selected paint products cover both interior and exterior applications, including high heat-reflective exterior coatings that help reduce heat accumulation and energy consumption; low-odor, antibacterial interior paints suitable for high-hygiene areas; ceiling paints; road marking paints; and premium-grade industrial coatings designed for durability, extended service life, and reduced long-term maintenance.
TOA executives added that this collaboration highlights the role of the industrial sector in advancing a comprehensive Sustainability Journey — from carbon footprint measurement and greenhouse gas reduction to transparent environmental disclosure through EPD certification. This approach helps prevent greenwashing and enables consumers and project owners to make informed decisions based on verifiable data.
The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a Type III environmental label under ISO 14025. It reports Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results covering raw material selection, manufacturing, transportation, usage, and end-of-life disposal. Quantitative indicators include Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), and Abiotic Depletion Potential for fossil fuels (ADP Fossil Fuels).
The collaboration between BDMS and TOA therefore represents more than the selection of construction materials. It marks a joint commitment to elevating Thailand’s healthcare facilities to international sustainability standards — delivering environments that are better for people’s health and better for the planet in the long term.
