Sleeve gastrectomy removes the lower part of the stomach and leaves a tubular pouch there instead of having silicone bands inserted. The procedure reduces the size of the patient’s stomach, causing the patient to eat less and lose weight. The surgery can also be used to treat high blood pressure and other obesity-related conditions. Not every overweight patient can undergo the procedure – only those who have a BMI above 35 are qualified.
